A conversation with the wedding illustrator Lucy Victoria Davis

"In my illustrations, fashion and the movement of the human body are essential".

The words of Lucy Victoria Davis, graphic designer by trade and artist at heart, are sincere and show her love for a profession that has accompanied her from London to Barcelona. It is in the same Ciudad Condal where she is currently developing the two paths that occupy her professional life: live sketching at fashion shows and at weddings, two universes as different in form as they are similar in substance.

“I have always liked drawing people, I am especially interested in how they are dressed. I love to pay attention to the details: a gesture, a pose, a garment, a colour...”

explains Davis, who is already a regular face at events such as 080 Barcelona Fashion, London Fashion Week and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, where she draws both what's happening on the catwalk and the secrets backstage. 

But what is the process to recreate on paper the reality that surrounds it? She is clear: 

"To work, I need comfort and clarity, so I always use watercolour pens on paper. I always use the same materials, whether at weddings, catwalks, or private parties. They fit my style very well and allow me to draw quickly. Depending on the project, I also use the computer to make final touches, play with colour, textures and contrast.”

But, as we all know, a wedding is special - what are we going to say? Lucy explains what it means for her to draw at such an important event:

"It's something very special, because it's possibly one of the most important days in the couple's life. I feel privileged too. Also, amidst everyone's emotions, including mine, I feel even more inspired to draw."

However, the luxury live fashion sketching service offered by Lucy goes much further. Although she is willing to travel, sometimes it is impossible to attend a wedding, and so she also offers alternatives:

“I offer illustrations from photographs of the event. I can create portraits of the bride and groom and the guests, of the space, of the little details... Illustrations can even be pre-ordered as gifts for the guests attending the celebration.”

Wishes do come true. Of course, the illustrator establishes a very close relationship with the couple throughout this journey. “I try to understand the couple's expectations,” she tells us. And to do so, she usually meets with the couple and/or the wedding planner before the wedding to plan the live sketching in detail: the number of sketches, the format, the space... At the end of the day, Lucy finishes,

“The most important thing is that the happy couple are relaxed on their wedding day and don't have to worry about anything. It's their big day and they should enjoy it! I'll take care of drawing it.”
